Dr. Louie’s research interests center around environmental colloid and surface phenomena, including adsorption and interactions of organic molecules and macromolecules at interfaces, and their implications and applications in the fields of environmental nanotechnology, fate and transport of emerging contaminants, and water treatment technologies.

Natural waters and wastewaters contain a complex mixture of organic molecules, including proteins, polysaccharides, and humic substances. We are interested in the interactions of these materials with nanoparticles and other surfaces, and how the coatings and particles modify each other’s transport, reactivity, and ultimate fate in the environment.
